Exceptional pair of Viscontea pendant lamps designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos, Italy.

The sculptural lamps consist of a delicate metal frame coated with the characteristic Cocoon resin. The translucent material stretches like a fine skin over the structure, clearly revealing its organic ribbed construction. When illuminated, the Cocoon material produces a particularly soft, warm, and diffused light.

The development of the Cocoon lamps dates back to the first experiments by the Eisenkeil company in Merano in 1959. There, experiments were conducted with the innovative synthetic material to create lamps with a diffused lighting effect. These experiments resulted in models including the Taraxacum, Gatto, and Viscontea. The desire to further develop this innovative form of lighting and put it into series production led to the founding of the Italian lighting manufacturer Flos in 1962.

The Viscontea is therefore one of the early designs that significantly shaped the design approach and development history of Flos.

The lamps are in beautiful vintage condition with age-related patina.
