Large sideboard featuring five asymmetrically opening doors and a rectilinear case accented with a brass edge. The piece is veneered in mahogany and fitted with a single shelf behind each door. The doors are centrally punctuated by three ceramic panels.
The ceramic elements were created by the French artist Françoise Bizette (1914–1996) and depict mythological sea creatures rendered in relief. The panels are signed “F. Bizette” at the lower right. Bizette produced her ceramic works in her own kiln in Sèvres and worked on commission, including projects for the French state. The sideboard represents a rare and compelling synthesis of French postwar furniture design and artistic ceramic production.
Françoise Bizette was a French ceramic artist, painter, and printmaker. She studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the École du Louvre and began her career as a drawing instructor in 1939. She later taught ceramics and art history, notably in Montpellier and at the Lycée de Sèvres.
From the early 1950s onward, Bizette regularly exhibited at major French salons, including the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, and the Salon des Femmes-Peintres. She received several awards and, between 1956 and 1989, executed monumental ceramic commissions for the French state, public institutions, and historic monuments.
