Italian Walnut Cabinet with Burl Panels and Marquetry, 1954
Italian cabinet in walnut, dated 1954, with a front of three doors divided into nine square fields. Each field holds a burl veneer panel with a softly curved, moulded edge, set within a mitred walnut frame whose grain changes direction from side to side. Marquetry in light and dark woods decorates the panels. Flowers and butterflies alternate across the front, with a lily at the centre.
The left and centre doors open onto one wide compartment with shelves. The right door opens onto a narrower compartment with shelves above three drawers with cut-out grips. Two of the doors have locks with keys. A stepped, projecting cornice runs along the top of the cabinet, and a rounded moulding runs along the bottom. The cabinet stands on four tall conical legs with shaped brass collars and brass sabots.
A pencil inscription on the back names Giuseppe Gaiani (?) as maker ("costruttore") and Antonio Meroni (?) as designer ("ideatore"), and gives the date 20 August 1954.
